A short window, from 1 to 21 m³/s

The Amblève stands out for its narrow range: the legal minimum is 1 m³/s (72-hour average) and flood conditions start at 21 m³/s, whereas the Semois tolerates 50. A burst of rain can therefore push it out of range quite quickly. Check the reading on the day itself.

Station and stretch

The measurement comes from SPW station L6510 at Stavelot. The official thresholds come from Annex 2 of the Walloon Government decree of 19 March 2009, for the Coo stretch: the Amblève between the confluence with the Warche and the Cheneux bridge.

What to do at each level

Flow (m³/s)LevelDecision
0 to 1Too lowForbidden: below the legal minimum, the rocky bottom is exposed.
1 to 3Very calmNavigable with care; shallow river, frequent scraping, for experienced paddlers only.
3 to 15IdealClear water, steady current, recommended for all levels.
15 to 21Strong currentFast, lively paddling, for seasoned kayakers only.

Cold and speed: the gear that matters

When the water is cold, a fastened life jacket is essential. Add a fleece, a windproof jacket and a dry change of clothes in a waterproof barrel. In strong wind, progress takes more effort. In fog, stay together and spot obstacles earlier.

At low flow, protect the hull: scraping is frequent on the shallows. At higher flow, plan your line ahead and do not stop in the middle of the current.

Choosing your moment

The narrow range makes the choice of day more important than elsewhere. After several dry days, the flow drifts towards the minimum and scraping becomes frequent. Right after heavy rain, it can exceed 21 m³/s in a short time. The best compromise lies between those two situations, between 3 and 15 m³/s. Check the reading in the morning, then just before launching, and postpone the trip if the river is close to a limit.

If you fall in, stay calm, keep your life jacket fastened and swim to the bank. The emergency number in Belgium is 112.

Comparing with the Semois and Lesse

Flows on the Amblève are more restrictive than on the Semois: for a first taste of kayaking, check the Semois water level. You can also check the Lesse or the Ourthe. The general rules are gathered on the paddling rules page.
